UGG Is Having a Bottega Moment
Somewhere between your favourite house slippers and Bottega Veneta's signature aesthetic, UGG might have just created the most fashionable comfort shoe of the season.
Remember when UGGs were considered the ultimate fashion faux pas? When wearing slippers outside the house was something you would only do on a particularly lazy Sunday? Well, those days are long gone. From the return of the Ultra Mini to the classic UGG boots in every imaginable colour, from neutrals to glitter-covered statement pieces, UGG has spent the past few years proving that comfort and good style don't have to be mutually exclusive. And just when we thought we'd seen every possible version of the iconic slipper, another one enters the chat.
Meet the UGG Tasman Woven, a new interpretation of the brand's beloved slip-on silhouette. And while the classic Tasman has long been a wardrobe staple for the cozy-girl community, this version feels a little different. A little more sophisticated.
The reason? Its woven suede exterior, which bears a striking resemblance to Bottega Veneta's iconic Intrecciato technique. The Italian luxury house has practically made woven leather its entire personality, so naturally, the comparison was inevitable. Except this time, we're talking about UGGs, not a four-figure designer purchase.
And that's exactly what makes them interesting.
For years, fashion has been flirting with the idea of making traditionally unattractive shoes desirable. Think Birkenstocks, ballet sneakers, chunky dad shoes and, of course, UGGs. The formula is simple: take something practical, give it the right styling and suddenly everyone wants a pair. But the Tasman Woven takes things a little further. Rather than leaning into the intentionally ugly aesthetic, it borrows from the visual language of luxury fashion.
The result? A shoe that looks like it belongs in a Copenhagen street-style gallery just as much as it belongs next to your bed.
Of course, adding a woven pattern doesn't automatically turn a slipper into a luxury item even though the resemblance to Bottega Veneta is perhaps a little too obvious to ignore.
The obsession with looking effortlessly put together hasn't gone anywhere, but the definition of effortless seems to be changing. We want clothes that look considered without feeling overly styled. Comfortable, but never underdressed. Pieces that work for a coffee run, a day at the office or a spontaneous dinner without requiring an entire outfit change.
In a way, the Tasman Woven captures this contradiction. A shoe originally designed with comfort in mind is now being reimagined through the codes of luxury, turning something ordinary into something desirable. It's less about dressing up and more about making dressing down look intentional.
Available in earthy shades including Chestnut, Forest Night and Black, the new design keeps the familiar soft lining and braided collar that made the original Tasman so popular. The woven exterior simply gives the silhouette a more polished finish.
Our personal favourite? The Chestnut colourway.
And while we love a good designer moment, we also appreciate when a more accessible brand manages to capture a similar aesthetic without demanding an entire month's rent. At around $205, these aren't exactly cheap for slippers, but compared to the luxury alternatives they bring to mind, the price suddenly feels a little more reasonable.
Still, one question remains: Are we buying these because we genuinely love them, or because they remind us of something significantly more expensive?
Probably a little bit of both.
Will they replace our classic Tasmans? Probably not. But will we suddenly start reconsidering every pair of shoes in our autumn wardrobe? Absolutely.
UGGs that look like Bottega, feel like slippers and go with almost everything? Consider us influenced.
